SNES: Batman Returns

November 20, 2008 - 8:52 am - Posted by Sean R.

If you thought Batman Returns was good on the Sega Genesis, you’ll be blown away by this remarkable SNES game. With a completely different look and feel, this plays more like Streets of Rage or Final Fight. In contrast to the dark, grainy graphics of the Genesis version, the visuals here look bright and crisp.

Super Nintendo: Batman Returns

Batman Returns more or less follows the film’s storyline, with the Catwoman and Penguin serving as the main villains. The fluidly-animated characters are absolutely huge, and the fighting action is top-notch. Not only can you execute the obligatory punches, jump-kicks, and throws, but you can actually fling enemies into the background scenery. I can’t put into words how satisfying it is to toss a thug through a department store window.

You’ll need to beat down belligerent clowns of all sizes, including fire-blowers, sword-swallowers, jugglers, and skull-headed motorcyclists - to name just a few. Should you find yourself between two enemies, you can grab them both and bash their heads together. Read the rest of this entry…

SNES: Zombies Ate My Neighbors

In this lighthearted SNES shooter, Konami parodies a number of classic horror films to good effect.

Released at a time when Nintendo didn’t allow blood in their games, Konami made the graphics in Zombies Ate My Neighbors appear cartoonish and whimsical in order to tone down the violence.

Zombies Ate My Neighbors

Playing as a boy or girl, your character must rescue a certain number of civilians from rampaging monsters in a series of imaginative overhead stages.

You’ll make use of unconventional weapons like water guns, pop sickles, and exploding 6-packs. Items you can collect include a potion that temporarily transforms you into a super-monster. Read the rest of this entry…

Classic NES Series TV Commercial

November 18, 2008 - 9:31 am - Posted by Sean R.

Check out this totally retro TV advertisement for the Nintendo Game Boy Advance SP Classic NES Edition:

I completely forgot this ad had music from the synth pop group Yaz. The song is called “Situation” off their 1982 album “Upstairs At Eric’s”.

There was a time when you couldn’t step into a dance club or a roller skating rink without hearing at least part of this song booming over the sound system.

Anyway, back to playing some retro games on my Game Boy Advance SP NES Edition.

NES - Shadow of the Ninja

November 17, 2008 - 11:46 am - Posted by Sean R.

Shadow of the Ninja for the Nintendo Entertainment System looks like your standard platform game, but it’s extremely well executed and offers some very exciting two-player co-op action.

Shadow of the Ninja Title

The game looks great, beginning with its slick intro that shows a very cool view of the Statue of Liberty at night with the twin towers in the background. The cargo ship stage looks amazing as you battle ninjas in the pouring rain, and the rooftop stage features gorgeous views of the skyline. Even less inspired locations like the sewers are colorful, detailed, and designed for maximum playability. Read the rest of this entry…

Nintendo Game Boy Micro

November 16, 2008 - 10:34 am - Posted by Brandon W.

About a week ago, I stumbled across a Game Boy Micro at my local game shop. At first sight I had no idea what I was looking at. It seemed to be some kind of accessory until I flipped it over and saw the Nintendo logo next to “Game Boy Micro”. I also saw the slot that looked like it fit Game Boy Advance games. Sure enough, I plugged in an Advance game and it worked.

Not only did it work, but it looked amazing. The miniature size screen was bright and sharp. I was surprised that this tiny; almost toy-like handheld ran so well. Despite being quite beat up I purchased the silver and black Game Boy Micro. I have not been disappointed since. Read the rest of this entry…

GameCube: Metroid Prime

November 15, 2008 - 12:50 pm - Posted by Sean R.

The original Metroid was an NES classic, and Super Metroid (1994) is considered by some to be the best game for the Super Nintendo. Both featured top-notch platform shooting in creepy, desolate space environments. Transitioning such a popular series to the third dimension turned out to be a monumental challenge.

GameCube Metroid Prime

Originally intended to be a first-person shooter for the N64, the project was plagued with controversy, endless delays, and development team changes.

All things considered, it’s surprising that Metroid Prime turned out this good! Not only does Prime capture the distinctive flavor of the series, but you’ll need to search high and low for a more polished video game. Read the rest of this entry…

Nintendo 64: Beetle Adventure Racing

November 14, 2008 - 4:32 pm - Posted by Sean R.

Fantastic tracks and plenty of surprises push this excellent Nintendo 64 racer by Electronic Arts to the top of the heap!

Beetle Adventure Racing’s six tracks are not only loaded with power-ups and shortcuts, but the inventive track designs offer beautiful scenery and ample opportunities to catch “big air”.

Certain sequences will catch you off-guard, like when a T-Rex leans over a wall and tries to eat your car in the Jurassic Park-inspired track!

The cars are limited to Volkswagen VW Beetles (duh) and the music is less than spectacular, but the races are thrilling.

There’s also a four-player “capture the flag” game variation is included, but I would have preferred a four-player racing mode.

Even so, arcade-minded gamers can’t go wrong with Beetle Adventure Racing.

If you don’t own the game, doing a quick check, the eBay 90-day average price is less then $4.00 USD, so it’s a real bargain if you want to pick it up.
